Materials

30 grams of King Cole big value baby DK in Main


Small amounts of King Cole big value baby DK in each contrast colour


5.00mm & 4.00mm crochet hooks


TENSION - 5tr and 2 rows of tr's measures approx 1 Inch

Helmet - With 5.00mm hook make 61ch, ss to first ch to form a ring, change to 4.00mm hook, making sure chain length does not twist, make 3ch, work 1tr into each ch to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (60tr + 3ch)

 

Next Row - 3ch, 1tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. Rpt last row 8 more times making 10 rows in all. Turn.

 

Brim - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to last tr, 2dc into last tr, ss to first dc. Turn. (62dc)


Next Row - Working into back loop only for this row, make 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * miss 1dc, 3tr into next dc, miss 1dc, 1dc into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last dc, 3tr into last dc, ss to first dc. Turn. Fasten off. (16, 3tr groups)


Next Row - Join contrast colour yarn to centre tr on first 3tr group,  Make 1ch, dc into base of 1ch, * miss 1tr, working into back loop of stitch work 3tr into next dc, miss 1tr, 1dc into centre tr of 3tr group, * rpt from * to * to last dc, 3tr into back loop of last dc, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.


Working into back loop of all dc's from now on rejoin main colour yarn to first dc, 3ch, 2tr into base of 3ch, * miss 1tr, 1dc into centre tr of 3tr group, miss 1tr, 3tr

into next dc, * rpt from * to * to last 3tr group, miss 1tr, 1dc into centre tr of 3tr group, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. Fasten off.


Using contrast and main colours alternately, rpt last row twice more, making 5 rows in all. Fasten off.


Fold brim back onto front of helmet, centre the slip stitched seam (start & end of row) to back.

 

Earflaps x 2 - With RS facing, working into loose loops under the brim, counting from the slip stitched seam at the back of the helmet, miss 8dc, rejoin main colour yarn to next dc, 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into next 7dc. Turn.

 

Next Row - 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each dc to end. Turn. Rpt last row twice. Turn.

 

Next Row - (Dec) 1ch, dec 1dc over first 2dc, (see abbrev) 1dc each dc to last 2dc, dec 1dc over last 2dc. Turn.


Rpt last row twice or until 2dc remain. Turn. ss last 2dc together to make a point, make 51ch, ss into 2nd ch from hook, ss into each ch to end, ss to earflap. Fasten off.


Miss 30dc, rejoin main colour yarn to next dc, 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each of next 7dc, turn leaving 8dc un-worked. Continue same as for first earflap. Fasten off.


Using main and contrast colours mixed make 1 medium sized and 2 small

pom-pom's, I used a Clover Pom-Pom maker.


Finishing - Gather at crown and sew securely, attach medium pom-pom over gathered top at crown and 1 small pom-pom to each end of chain ties, sew in and tie off loose ends of yarn, make a bow with chain ties.
